Microsoft president Brad Smith to host key conversations with world leaders at APEC CEO Summit 2021
Technology leader Brad Smith will host two important conversations with world leaders at the APEC CEO Summit being hosted in Auckland, New Zealand in November.
Microsoft’s president and vice chair, Smith is one of the technology industry’s most respected figures.
Smith will be in conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on day two of the CEO Summit. He will also host a conversation with another APEC leader on day one.
Smith plays a key role in spearheading Microsoft’s work on critical issues involving the intersection of technology and society, including cybersecurity, privacy, artificial intelligence, environmental sustainability, human rights, immigration and philanthropy.
In his recent bestselling book, co-authored with Microsoft’s Carol Ann Browne, Tools and Weapons: The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age, Brad Smith urges the tech sector to assume more responsibility and calls for governments to move faster to address the challenges that new technologies are creating.
Brad Smith joined Microsoft in 1993 and spent three years in Paris leading the legal and corporate affairs team in Europe. In 2002, he was named Microsoft’s general counsel and spent the following decade leading work to manage the company’s agreement with governments around the world and companies across the tech sector.
As president and vice chair of Microsoft, Brad Smith leads a team of more than 1,500 business, legal and corporate affairs professionals who operate in more than 120 countries. Prior to joining Microsoft, Mr Smith was a partner at law firm Covington and Burling, and he has also served on the Netflix board of directors since 2015.
In addition to these sessions a number of keynote speakers have been confirmed for the Summit including Robyn Denholm, Jerome Foster II, Amal Clooney, Richard Edelman, Professor Jonathan Haidt, Dr David Suzuki, Amber Mac and Tony Fernandes along with a host of high-powered panellists who will discuss a range of key themes.
This year’s APEC CEO Summit is a virtual gathering of the world’s most powerful CEOs, business leaders, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, prime ministers and presidents of APEC economies. Delegates will attend online at the Summit which is being hosted and broadcast from the Aotea Centre in central Auckland on 11 and 12 November 2021 (NZT).
The APEC CEO Summit 2021 will focus on five themes:
The state of the world with and post Covid: economic recovery, trade and protectionism.
The Digital Disruption Opportunity: digital transformation, technology and innovation, and the importance of digital equity.
The Primacy of Trust: ESG (environmental, social, governance) – the next focus for business, and business as a force for good.
The Future of Energy: clean technology, renewable energy, and energy transition including hydrogen.
The Sustainability Imperative: sustainable growth, climate change, food sustainability and provenance.
