Sir Stephen Tindall, GNZM


Sir Stephen Tindall is the founder of New Zealand retailer The Warehouse and the Tindall Foundation. When he started The Warehouse in 1982 it was a private company until late 1994 when it listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. He held the position of Managing Director until January 2001, then appointed a CEO and assumed the position of Founder, returning as Group CEO from May 2003 until October 2004. 

In 1994, he and his wife Margaret established The Tindall Foundation which began by supporting families and social services, and then extended to include environmental initiatives and those that create employment and encourage enterprise. He has invested over $500m seed and venture capital through K1W1 Ltd and other vehicles into over 200 startup and early stage businesses ranging from biotech, environmental technology, green energy, electronics, high tech and software. 

Sir Stephen was awarded Knight Grand Companion of the NZ Order of Merit in 2019 amongst many other awards recognising his vision and leadership over the years.
