First ever APEC Informal Leaders' Retreat tonight
Tonight Leaders representing APEC economies meet for an extraordinary retreat to shape a regional response to the recovery from COVID-19.
This is the first time leaders have met outside of APEC’s traditional Leaders’ Week at the end of the year.
Leading a regional response to the pandemic is one of New Zealand’s highest priorities as APEC Chair. It has been the focus of recent meetings of Finance, Structural Reform and Trade Ministers, with all economies focused on international cooperation in responding to COVID-19 and laying the foundations for recovery.
Leaders will share vital information that will help shape a regional response to COVID-19. This strategic discussion will lay the groundwork for their next meeting in November.
COVID-19 has had a devastating human and economic impact – and controlling the pandemic is every government’s over-riding priority. As APEC host in 2021, New Zealand recognises the need for the region to join together in this time of crisis and uncertainty.
The APEC Informal Leaders’ Retreat is a closed session, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will host a virtual media conference afterwards to share the meeting’s outcomes.
