High flying speakers announced as APEC CEO Summit registrations open

An entrepreneur who started a no-frills airline, an award-winning scientist and broadcaster focused on helping humanity and protecting nature, and an internationally-renowned tech reporter and innovator are the first to be announced in the speaker line-up at the APEC CEO Summit 2021.

Registrations open today for the Summit, which for the first time ever will be held as a physical and virtual event, with New Zealand attendees in Auckland joined online by delegates from around the world on 11 and 12 November (NZT). Thousands of delegates are expected to attend.

“The annual Summit attracts top-tier CEOs, business leaders, entrepreneurs and thought-leaders to have interactive discussions amongst each other and with prime ministers and presidents of APEC economies on the big issues facing New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific and the world,” said Summit Chair Barbara Chapman.

“The Summit only comes to New Zealand once every 21 years so this is an incredible opportunity for New Zealand’s business community.”

The first three virtual speakers were announced today to mark registrations opening:

  • Dr David Suzuki, is a gifted interpreter of science and nature who provides a compelling look at the state of our environment. Recipient of The Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television's 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award, he offers leading-edge insights into sustainable development and a model for a world in which humanity can live well and still protect our environment.
  • Amber Mac is an award-winning podcaster, TV host, bestselling author and internationally-known technology reporter. She hosts a top-rated weekly SiriusXM radio show and podcast and is at the forefront of reporting on and participating in digital innovation, including the future of work, commerce, and emerging technologies.
  • One of Asia’s most recognisable entrepreneurs, Tony Fernandes is best known for co-founding low-cost carrier AirAsia in 2001 and democratising air travel in the region. Since 2018, Fernandes has been spearheading a digital transformation of his businesses, launching airasia Digital which includes logistics, fintech and a super app, a digital lifestyle platform.

The APEC CEO Summit 2021 will focus on five themes:

The state of the world with and post Covid: economic recovery, trade and protectionism.

The Digital Disruption Opportunity: digital transformation, technology and innovation, and the importance of digital equity.

The Primacy of Trust: ESG (environmental, social, governance) – the next focus for business, and business as a force for good.

The Future of Energy: clean technology, renewable energy, and energy transition including hydrogen.

The Sustainability Imperative: sustainable growth, climate change, food sustainability and provenance.
